Visually Impaired Woman Alleges Misleading by EC Official in Kumawu By-election

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused an Electoral Officer of ‘forcing’ an old woman to vote against her will during the ongoing by-election at Kumawu in the Ashanti Region.

A woman believed to be in her 70s and ‘visually impaired’, according to a report filed by Peace FM’s Odehenufuor Jackson, alleged that she had been made to vote for the wrong candidate at the Methodist JHS 2 polling station, Bodomoase in Kumawu, after telling an electoral officer to guide her to cast her vote.

According to the reports, she asked the officer to help her vote for the candidate with an ‘Umbrella’ symbol on the ballot paper, stressing the candidate is number 1 on the paper.

However, the confusion is that the candidate who is number 1 on the ballot paper is a New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate whose symbol is an ‘Elephant’ while the candidate with ‘Umbrella’ symbol is contesting on the ticket of the NDC.

She reported to NDC polling agents that the Electoral Officer supposedly tricked her to vote against the NDC candidate.

This, therefore, has resulted in serious conflict between the leaders of the NDC and the Electoral Commission.
