The Works and Housing Ministry has directed that all citizens voluntarily desilt choked drains within their neigbourhoods to enhance the free flow of sewage.

At a press briefing on Tuesday, the sector Minister, Samuel Atta Akyea, said the Ghana Metrological Agency has predicted a heavy downpour this year, hence, citizens must act now to prevent the looming threat of flood.

“The three Ministries [Sanitation, Local Government and Rural Development as well as Works and Housing Ministries], together with the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), will lead this voluntary national exercise.

“Our President is not inept, therefore, Ghanaians must not be inept. Let us contain the imminent floods now,” he emphasised

The MP for Akim Abuakwa South constituency indicated that the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic is not over, therefore, Ghanaians must not sit aloof to be overwhelmed with floods.

Otherwise, it would be a double slap on the nation’s resources.

“In the all hands on deck fight against Covid-19, President Akufo-Addo has called for sacrifice, from all well-meaning Ghanaians. Therefore, we urge you all to heed to our clarion call.”

Highlighting the commitment of government in improving the drainage system in the country, the Minister noted that the Akufo-Addo-led administration invested over GH¢ 200 million in drainage works in 2018, the largest investment in that area in Ghana’s history.

“This has tremendously helped us in containing the flooding challenges last year, because we had heavy downpours but due to the arrangement in place, and a huge infusion of money, we were able to contain the situation.”

Over the past years, floods have consistently recorded in Ghana and it continues to wreak havoc in parts of the country especially in the Greater Accra Region.
